Electric stimulation can be muscular, general and Transcutaneous (through the skin) Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS or TNS). The muscular type of electric stimulation seeks to strengthen the muscles by reducing muscle spasms. It is a non-invasive, non-addictive modality without side effects. TENS works to decrease the muscles which can create bothersome back or neck pain and has been shown to help patients control acute and chronic pain. The treatment is believed to stimulate the body's production of endorphins, the body's natural painkiller.
What is TENS?
A painless, electrically-stimulating current is sent intermittently to specific nerves. This mild electrical current generates heat and muscle movement to relieve stiffness, improve mobility, and relieve pain.
How is E-Stim treatment administered?
Electrode patches are applied to the skin in the area to be treated. The mild current runs from the stationary stimulator through these patches. TENS is also used to deliver topical steroid medication through the skin to treat acute episodes of pain, causing the medication to migrate into soft tissue serving to reduce inflammation.
